Nederlandse Gemeentewapens

"Van lazuur, beladen met een gouden kruis, waarop een verkort en versmald kruis van lazuur en gekantonneerd met een gouden klimmenden leeuw. Het schild gedekt met een gouden kroon."

NB : de kroon heeft 5 bladeren

Oorsprong/verklaring :
Het wapen is afgeleid van het wapen van de familie Van Ootmersum. De familie voerde als wapen een schild van zilver, waarop een kruis van sabel; in ieder kanton vergezeld van een leeuw van azuur.

Al in 1350 is er spake van een familie Van Oetmerschem, maar van die familie is geen wapen bekend. In 1480 komt het wapen voor bij de familie Van Ootmersum, maar of die verwant is aan de oudere familie is niet bekend.

Wanneer het verkorte kruis is toegevoegd is niet bekend. Het komt al voor op een rond 1400 vervaardigde gevelsteen. Het wapen wordt daarbij tevens gehouden door twee leeuwen en gedekt door een kroon met 15 parels.

De burgemeester wist in 1815 geen kleuren, waarop het wapen in rijkskleuren is bevestigd.

Gebruik van het wapen door derden is niet toegestaan (zie ook Wettelijke Status

Het wapen wordt ook gevoerd door twee gemeenten, die vroeger deel uitmaakten van het rechtsgebied van Ootmarsum, namelijk Tubbergen en Denekamp.
